Health Literacy Boosts Male Involvement in Family Planning [video]

By Emiene Erameh, Allwomen

The Family Planning News Network (FPNN) Community Reporter, Emiene Erameh with Allwomen touches base with Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, Kwara State Commissioner for Health, at the 8th Nigeria Family Planning Conference.

She emphasizes the importance of involving people who identify as male into family planning work more closely and in ways that resonate with them.

"Men cannot support what they do not understand. So it's crucial to factor men into any conversations—any discussions around health and specifically family planning," she said.

Health literacy is a major part of securing buy-in from men when it comes to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), particularly in the African context. Ensuring people have a clear understanding of the multitude of benefits of family planning makes it possible for them to make informed decisions around the health of themselves and their families.
