COMMUNITY-POWERED, COMMUNITY-OWNED

FPNN is an engaged, informed, and connected network of journalists, influencers, technical experts, community reporters, and content creators committed to reporting on the power of family planning.

FPNN is built on the core principle that the most authentic and powerful approach to elevating a story is for it to come from within the community it involves.

ORGANIC BEGINNINGS

In search of a practical approach to supporting media coverage of family planning and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) more widely, the William H. Gates Sr. Institute for Population and Reproductive Health developed a platform approach to digital news, content creation, partnerships, and community reporting, known as the Family Planning News Network (FPNN).

We initially launched FPNN as a global media fellowship at the 2022 International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP). While other media fellowship programs influenced our model, FPNN is unique in its exclusive focus on sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice.

Thanks to our innovative start-up approach, over the course of two years, we have developed multiple proof-of-concept projects ready for scaling.

UNCOVERING KEY STORIES THROUGH INTERSECTIONALITY

The power of the FPNN platform lies in the ability to identify and report on the stories that are often overlooked. By leveraging the full diversity of the SRHR community, FPNN Community Reporters can place a spotlight on local challenges and solutions, often in their languages, channels, and gatherings.

FPNN represents voices that are inclusive of:

  • Geographic diversity

  • Cultural diversity

  • Racial diversity

  • Religious diversity

  • Age diversity

  • Sex/gender diversity

  • Linguistic diversity

  • Neurodiversity Educational diversity

  • Ability diversity
