This week, three FPNN Community Reporters representing three different Latin American countries will be in Cartagena covering the Fifth session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Learn more about these extraordinary reporters and what they hope to share with you this week.
Sofia Moncayo Cortéz | COLOMBIA
REPORTERO DE LA COMUNIDAD FPNN & ANALISTA DE COMUNICACIONES, PROFAMILIA / FPNN COMMUNITY REPORTER & COMMUNICATIONS ANALYST, PROFAMILIA
“Para mi, es muy importante poder dar una perspectiva lo más real posible, con una narrativa positiva, encaminada al cambio social, cercana y respetuosa frente a los diferentes temas que se tratarán y las poblaciones que asistirán a la conferencia. Creo en el poder de la comunicación de soluciones y como la forma de narrar o contar las historias pueden aportar al cambio y la deconstrucción de prejuicios y estigmas alrededor de los derechos sexuales y reproductivos.
Por mi rol en Profamilia, el principal interés serán todas las temáticas encaminadas a salud, derechos humanos, sexuales y reproductivos, con un importante enfoque en juventud. Entre los temas de interés están: anticoncepción, autonomía reproductiva, equidad de género, implementación del consenso de Montevideo, violencias basadas en género, matrimonio infantil y uniones forzadas tempranas.”
“For me, it is very important to give a perspective as real as possible, with a positive narrative, aimed at social change, close and respectful to the different issues that will be addressed and the populations that will attend the conference. I believe in the power of communicating solutions and how the way of narrating or telling stories can contribute to change and the deconstruction of prejudices and stigmas around sexual and reproductive rights.
Because of my role in Profamilia, my main interest will be all issues related to health, human, sexual and reproductive rights, with an important focus on youth. Among the topics of interest are: contraception, reproductive autonomy, gender equity, implementation of the Montevideo Consensus, gender-based violence, child marriage and early forced unions.”
Yoxana Varela | HONDURAS
REPORTERO DE LA COMUNIDAD FPNN Y DEFENSORA DE LOS JÓVENES DE SRHR / FPNN COMMUNITY REPORTER, SRHR YOUTH ADVOCATE, GOJOVEN HONDURAS
“Para mi, es muy importante brindar un aporte desde la juventud basada en temas que integren la importancia sobre los derechos sexuales y reproductivos, adquiridos desde mi organización Gojoven Honduras y poder construir y lograr una mejora y crecimiento a largo plazo con el objetivo de impulsar y avanzar el crecimiento de mi organización. Considero que tener la participación de jóvenes es muy importante por que no somos solamente el futuro si no el presente.”
Yoxana espera cubrir los siguientes temas:
- Derechos sexuales y reproductivos
- Prevención de embarazos adolescentes
- Planificación familiar
- Juventudes
- Consenso de Montevideo
- Escuela de Incidencia en relación a la V Conferencia de Población y Desarrollo
"For me, it is very important to provide a contribution from the youth based on issues that integrate the importance of sexual and reproductive rights, acquired from my organization Gojoven Honduras and to build and achieve long-term improvement and growth in order to promote and advance the growth of my organization. I believe that having the participation of young people is very important because we are not only the future but also the present".
Yoxana hopes to cover the following topics: Sexual and reproductive rights, prevention of teenage pregnancy, family planning, youth, Montevideo Consensus, and Advocacy School in relation to the 5th Conference on Population and Development.

REPORTERO DE LA COMUNIDAD FPNN Y FP2030 COORDINADOR DE COMUNICACIÓN Y MEDIOS DE COMUNICACIÓN / FPNN COMMUNITY REPORTER & FP2030 COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA COORDINATOR
“Esta semana, la perspectiva que aportare será de una perspectiva única, reconociendo mi propia interseccionalidad. Aunque sea una mujer latina de color, he tenido privilegios y experiencias en mi vida que reconozco que mucha gente no. Desde la perspectiva de Natalia de León Tello, busco reportar de una manera autentica, considerando las experiencias que he tenido y que han formado mis opiniones personales.
Considerando mi rol con FP2030, busco enfocarme en planificación familiar, derechos sexuales y reproductivos, y anticoncepción. Para mi, es particularmente importante cubrir el hecho que ciertas poblaciones han sido históricamente marginalizadas en la región, ej. personas Indígenas, personas afrodescendientes, personas de la comunidad LGBTQIA+, etc, y tienen acceso limitado a derechos sexuales y reproductivos y métodos de planificación familiar. Busco cubrir la interseccionalidad del Consenso de Montevideo y los desafíos que se encuentran hoy en día.“
“This week, the perspective I will bring will be from a unique perspective, recognizing my own intersectionality. Although I am a Latina woman of color, I have had privileges and experiences in my life that I recognize that many people do not. From Natalia de León Tello's perspective, I seek to report in an authentic way, considering the experiences I have had that have shaped my personal opinions.
Considering my role with FP2030, I seek to focus on family planning, sexual and reproductive rights, and contraception. For me, it is particularly important to cover the fact that certain populations have been historically marginalized in the region, e.g. Indigenous people, Afro-descendants, LGBTQIA+ people, etc., and have limited access to sexual and reproductive rights and family planning methods. I seek to cover the intersectionality of the Montevideo Consensus and the challenges they face today.”
