Key Learning Moments at the Population and Development Conference
Attending the Population and Development Conference was an enriching experience that left me with many significant learning moments. Among them, the importance of data and evidence in policymaking was one of the highlights. Listening to experts and activists share vital research and statistics underscored how crucial it is to base our decisions on accurate and up-to-date information. I especially appreciated having the opportunity to meet leaders in the feminist movement in LAC.
During the sessions, data was presented that revealed shocking realities about youth in our region. For example, 46.9% of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean is composed of youth. This type of information not only illuminates the magnitude of the challenges facing youth, but also guides the development of effective and relevant policies. Without solid data, our initiatives can lack direction and effectiveness.
Another memorable moment was the presentation of exemplary regional practices that have proven successful in improving youth access to health services. Models such as the Gillick Competency Test in St. Lucia and Guyana allow children under the age of 16 to access reproductive health services if they demonstrate that they are mentally capable of making informed decisions. This innovative approach respects the autonomy of young people and provides them with the support they need to take care of their health. In Jamaica, the "Teen Hub" model was highlighted as a safe and welcoming space where young people can access SRHR information and services. This type of initiative not only facilitates access to essential services, but also creates an environment of trust and respect, which is crucial for the well-being of adolescents.
These regional practices are not only inspiring, but also provide an adaptable framework for other countries. By learning from these successful models, we can develop strategies that fit our local realities, thus improving the effectiveness of our interventions.

Escuchar a expertos y activistas compartir investigaciones y estadísticas vitales subrayó lo crucial que es basar nuestras decisiones en información precisa y actualizada. En especial, aprecie tener la oportunidad de conocer a lideresas del movimiento feminista en LAC.
Durante las sesiones, se presentaron datos que revelaron realidades impactantes sobre la juventud en nuestra región. Por ejemplo, el 46.9% de la población de América Latina y el Caribe está compuesta por jóvenes. Este tipo de información no solo ilumina la magnitud de los desafíos que enfrentan los jóvenes, sino que también guía el desarrollo de políticas efectivas y pertinentes.
