It is impressive that the sentence that stood out to me the most of the entire day was a ten-word sentence. Ten words that were to affect my perception of the Population and Development Conference for the next few days. "Young people represent 46.9% of the region," they mentioned during the opening ceremony. Almost half of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean is composed of youth, which is really important to emphasize. This is not only impressive but also highlights the importance of focusing on the needs and aspirations of young people in the region. FP2030 LAC Hub, together with IPPF, Save the Children, Profamilia, led an initiative to include 28 young participants from the region in the 5th Conference on Population and Development. However, for the future of these conferences, it is necessary to continually engage adolescents and youth.
The youth of Latin America and the Caribbean represent a crucial segment of society. Their voice, needs and perspectives are essential to the development and future of the region. However, they are often overlooked in important discussions and policies. The Population and Development Conference offers a platform to change this by highlighting the need to integrate adolescents and youth in the decision-making process and in the implementation of public policies.
It is critical to recognize that adolescents and youth face unique challenges, from access to education and employment, to participation in politics and decision-making. At the same time, they are an incredible source of innovation, energy and positive change. Ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights are protected not only benefits young people, but also the overall development of the region.
The fact that young people represent 46.9% of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean forces us to rethink our strategies and policies. We need to create spaces where adolescents and young people can actively participate, contribute their ideas and lead initiatives. Investing in their education, health and well-being is an investment in the future of the entire region.

Diez palabras que iban a afectar mi percepción de la Conferencia de Población y Desarrollo durante los siguientes días. “Los y las jóvenes representan el 46.9% de la región,” mencionaron durante la ceremonia de apertura. Casi la mitad de la población de Latinoamérica y el Caribe es compuesta por juventudes, lo cual es realmente importante de enfatizar. Este dato no solo es impresionante, sino que también resalta la importancia de centrarse en las necesidades y aspiraciones de los jóvenes en la región. FP2030 LAC Hub, junto a IPPF, Save the Children, Profamilia, lidero una iniciativa para incluir a 28 jóvenes participantes de la región en la V Conferencia de Población y Desarrollo. Sin embargo, para el futuro de estas conferencias, es necesario seguir continuamente involucrando a adolescentes y jóvenes.

El dato de que los jóvenes representan el 46.9% de la población en Latinoamérica y el Caribe nos obliga a replantear nuestras estrategias y políticas. Necesitamos crear espacios donde los adolescentes y jóvenes puedan participar activamente, contribuir con sus ideas y liderar iniciativas. La inversión en su educación, salud y bienestar es una inversión en el futuro de toda la región.
Tal y como enfatiza Anaí, de 16 años de Perú, “Es la primera vez que adolescentes y jóvenes estamos participando en un evento tan grande entonces también hay que dar el contexto de esa invisibilización que se les da a los niños, niñas y adolescentes, pero también a las juventudes, porque tampoco no deja de lado que las jóvenes también sufren derechos entonces y son vulnerados. Es importante que estos resultados o acuerdos que se tengan no sólo se queden aquí, sino se lleven a nuestras bases, regiones para que también los niños, niñas, adolescentes, que son los que están siendo más vulnerados en la sociedad, sepan y tengan el contexto de que también hay un documento que les puede ayudar.”

Reconocer su importancia y trabajar para incluirlos en todos los aspectos de la vida social y política es esencial para el desarrollo sostenible y equitativo de la región.
