Do governments care about demographic studies? If not, so what?

“We cannot be doing research without involving decision-makers. Unfortunately, our governments do not provide adequate funds to support demographic research studies,” says Prof. Jacques Emina from the University of Kinshasa.

Power shifting in demographic studies should come with the accountability of the government’s support. This could help in building trust when using the researcher’s evidence when informing policy.

In research studies involving reproductive health for vulnerable groups, this is very important, especially in African countries where topics around reproductive health remain culturally sensitive.
